Is Cardio Affecting your muscle gainz?
Today we put this to bed and give you recommendations on what is currently best.
HIIT Cardio Affecting Muscle Gains
This month we look at a meta-analysis (Meta-analysis is the statistical procedure for combining data from multiple studies.) on doing HIIT and strength training together.
We find out if will it kill your gains??
The quick answer is yes if done close to each other, e.g within the same session.
But, They looked at if we are still able to do both, and providing you are giving your body time to recover HIIT ( High-intensity interval training ) won't have much of an effect on your muscle. I would suggest 6 to 24 hours between them.
So you could still do your cardio in the morning and be able to weight train in the afternoon or vice versa without worrying about muscle loss.
One thing to note:
This affected mostly in the lower body muscles due to the equipment we use for HIIT e.g bike, rower, treadmill, squats, etc. I can just hear people now saying they don't have to do a warm-up now, that's not the case.
Don't you dare not warm up!
This does not include your warm-up, 15 minutes on the bike or treadmill at medium intensity will not affect you.
The takeaway
Always keep your goals in mind when training, if you are wanting to tone up and lose weight don't do it in the same session, pick one. The study is linked here.
Fun Fact
HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) Helps you burn more calories in a session than 40min on a treadmill walking. *at a steady pace.
